Google's Android outsells iPhone, threatens BlackBerry
Though the Canadian icon BlackBerry continues to maintain its lead in the US smart phone market, handsets with Google's Android operating system may upset it soon, says a report released Monday.
In fact, the devices with the Google operating system have left Apple's iPhone behind in the first quarterly sales, says the report.
Prepared by the NPD Group, the US consumer market research company, the report says Google's Android operating system has shaken up the mobile phone market, moving past Apple to take the number two position among smartphone operating systems.
According to the report, the Android operating system is now at second position with a share of 28 percent, just behind BlackBerry's 36 percent. Apple's share is 21 percent.
Android's growth has been fuelled by aggressive marketing by the carrier Verizon Wireless. But Google's operating system still has a long way to go as it controls only 9 percent of the US market as against iPhone's 25.4 percent.
The US smart phone market is controlled by four carriers - AT&T (32 percent), Verizon Wireless (30 percent), T-Mobile (17 percent) and Sprint (15 percent).
"Carriers continue to offer attractive pricing for devices, but will need to present other data-plan options to attract more customers in the future,'' said Rubin.
The report comes just more than a month after Forbes said in March that BlackBerry's lead over iPhone is shrinking and it will overtake the Canadian icon by early next year.
Forbes had also said that the "end of AT&T exclusivity will give Apple's iPhone wider distribution in the US (comparable to BlackBerry distribution)."

Should I go into software development...???
A few months ago, I met someone through a mutual friend who wanted my opinion about whether he should study Computer Science in college with the goal of becoming a software developer. This is my response to him.
I’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is, other than the lack of experience in the field, you are in a great position in terms of timing and geography (note: he is a high school senior who lives near Rochester, NY). The bad news is the software development field has started to undergo some very serious shifts in terms of how things are done, which could potentially make it a fairly unattractive field. Let’s start with the good.
The good news
First off, your lack of experience in the development field has allowed you to not have any prejudices about it, and unlike a lot of aspiring developers I talk to, you aren’t filled with delusions or fantasies about what it would be like to work as a developer. Too many folks go to school thinking that they are going to graduate and be working on, say, World of Warcraft. Yes, it is possible to go straight from school to the gaming industry, but you have to break your back in school to do so, and preferably go to a school with a specialized gaming program. I recently read an article in Communications of the ACM about these gaming programs, and what those students are doing is not easy. Very few students make it to those schools and those programs, and people who have that kind of goal without the necessary motivation and talent will be sadly disappointed.
The bad news
More and more software development work is sent to India, Russia, China, Israel, Romania, and Ireland; these countries have excellent educational systems, much cheaper labor, and laws that do not give employees much power. A few years ago this was annoying but not horrible because the work shipped overseas was generally low value programming. A lot of these offshoring arrangements failed due to language barriers, time zone differences, cultural barriers, and other factors that basically act as “friction” in the process.
In other words, after you would graduate college, you would be competing not just with the other recent graduates in your area but with graduates around the world. Think of this as a challenge; someone else is willing and able to do the work for less money, so you have to be willing and able to do the work better.
Another factor is the changing nature of software development. In the last few decades, and especially in the last five years or so, we’ve seen a raft of products introduced that make programming more of a “gluing parts together” than ever thought possible. This doesn’t mean that, in the future, there won’t be programmers, but it does mean that there will be a pretty deep split between the people doing the “gluing” (who will be about equal to a factory worker from the early 1900s) and the people designing the glue and the parts. This trend will continue, and it must continue, for these reasons:
Software development projects are very expensive, especially in relation to how much money they save in too many cases.
Making changes to existing software is much harder than making it to begin with, and it is extremely difficult if the person making the changes isn’t who wrote the original (or if it has been a while since that developer touched the code).
Software patterns are very well established in many cases, and there is little reason to keep re-writing the same code.
To get experience, start with a few simple applications on your own or perhaps modify some existing open source code. This will provide you with hands-on experience, as well as something to put on your resume.
The key is that you must differentiate yourself. If you graduate school and you spent that time flipping burgers and getting Bs and Cs in Computer Science, guess what? There are thousands of students across the country who just graduated in that situation and thousands more overseas, all of whom are hungry for work. But if you graduate from school with two years of quality internships or part-time employment, with a background in real software engineering (especially if you took a specialized course like those video game programs discussed in the ACM article), then you should stand out and have no problem starting a rewarding career.

My philosopher friend is explaining again
that the bottle of well-chilled beer in my hand

Dear Sir/Madam ,
Lt. Saurabh Kalia of 4 JAT Regiment of the Indian Army laid down his
life at the young age of 22 for the nation while guarding the frontiers at Kargil.
His parents, indeed the Indian Army and nation itself, lost a dedicated, honest and brave son.
He was the first officer to detect and inform about Pakistani intrusion. Pakistan captured
him and his patrol party of 5 brave men alive on May 15, 1999 from the Indian side of LOC.
They were kept in captivity for three weeks and subjected to unprecedented brutal torture,
evident from their bodies handed over by Pakistan Army on June 9, 1999.
The Pakistanis indulged in dastardly acts of inflicting burns on these Indian officers with cigarettes, piercing their ears with hot rods, removing their eyes before puncturing them and breaking most of the bones and teeth.
They even chopped off various limbs and private organs of the Indiansoldiers besides inflicting unimaginable physical and mental torture.
After 22 days of torture, the brave soldiers were ultimately shot dead. A detailed post-mortem report is with the Indian Army. Pakistan dared to humiliate India this way flouting all international norms.
They proved the extent to which they can degrade humanity. However, the Indian soldiers did not break while undergoing all this unimaginable barbarism, which speaks volumes of their patriotism, grit, determination, tenacity and valour - something all of India should be proud of.
Sacrificing oneself for the nation is an honour every soldier would be proud of, but no parent, army or nation can accept what happened to these brave sons of India. I am afraid every parent may think twice to send their child in the armed forces if we all fall short of our duty in safeguarding the PRISONERS OF WAR AND LET THEM MEET THE FATE OF LT.SAURABH KALIA.
It may also send a demoralising signal to the army personnel fighting for the Nation that our POWs in Pak cannot be taken care of. It is a matter of shame and disgust that most of Indian Human Rights Organisations by and large, showed apathy in this matter.
Through this humble submission, may I appeal to allthe civilized people irrespective of colour, caste, region, religion and political lineage to stir their conscience and rise to take this as a NATIONAL ISSUE !!!
International Human Rights Organizations must be approached to expose and pressure Pakistan to identify, book and punish all those who perpetrated this heinous crime to our men in uniform.
If Pakistan is allowed to go unpunished in this case, we can only imagine the consequences.
